The Pascal story I promised
What happened after Merle left the French village...
At the end of Blackbird Fly, Merle leaves the French village where she has been remodeling a house her husband left her. She goes home to the US. Her village, Malcouziac, in the Dordogne, is not particularly friendly toward her but they are coming around. Just as she is coming around to liking the village. Well, you’ve read it, right? You know the scrapes she gets into, some including a handsome Frenchman named Pascal d’Onscon.
But what about Pascal? Is he reconciled to her leaving? (You may have already read the novella that explains where he went when he disappears from Malcouziac in the middle of the book. Here it is: A Tale of Two Vineyards.)
I always think it is so much easier to be the one who leaves than the one who stays behind. When you leave you have brand new adventures to blot out the memories. But for the one left behind? Does the space taken up by the absent one fill up immediately? Does the one left behind easily begin again somewhere else?
What does Pascal do?
